SASSA has launched a new mobile application that allows beneficiaries to check their grant status, update personal information, and receive important notifications directly on their smartphones.

The app, named "MySASSA," is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. It represents a significant step forward in SASSA's digital transformation journey and aims to improve service delivery through technology.

Key Features

The MySASSA app includes a comprehensive range of features designed to simplify grant management:

  • Real-time grant status checking
  • Payment date notifications and reminders
  • Secure profile management and information updates
  • Digital submission of supporting documents
  • Appeal application and tracking
  • Nearest office locator with current wait times
  • Direct messaging with SASSA support agents
  • News and announcements section

"This app puts the power of grant management directly in the hands of our beneficiaries," said SASSA CEO Busisiwe Memela-Khambula. "It reduces the need for in-person visits and allows for quick, convenient access to essential services."

Accessibility Features

The app has been designed with accessibility as a priority:

  • Support for all 11 official South African languages
  • Voice command functionality for visually impaired users
  • High-contrast mode and adjustable text sizes
  • Offline mode for areas with limited connectivity
  • Low data usage design (less than 5MB for the basic version)
  • USSD fallback for feature phones

These features ensure that the app is usable by as many beneficiaries as possible, regardless of their device type or connectivity situation.

Enhanced Security

The MySASSA app incorporates multiple security layers to protect user data:

  • Biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition)
  • Two-factor authentication for sensitive transactions
  • End-to-end encryption for all communications
  • Automatic logout after period of inactivity
  • Remote device management in case of lost or stolen phones

"Security is our top priority," explained the SASSA IT Director. "We've implemented bank-level security protocols to ensure that beneficiaries' personal and financial information remains protected at all times."

Zero-Rating and Data Costs

To address concerns about data costs, SASSA has:

  • Negotiated zero-rating with major mobile networks (Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom)
  • Optimized the app to use minimal data when zero-rating is not available
  • Created a lite version that uses up to 80% less data
  • Enabled offline functionality for key features

These measures ensure that beneficiaries can use the app without worrying about high data costs.

Rollout Plan

The app will be rolled out in phases to ensure stability and address any issues:

  • Phase 1 (March 2025): Basic functionality (status checks, payment dates, notifications)
  • Phase 2 (May 2025): Document submission and profile management
  • Phase 3 (July 2025): Appeals process and direct messaging
  • Phase 4 (September 2025): Integration with banking partners and additional services

SASSA will collect user feedback throughout the rollout to continuously improve the app's functionality and user experience.
