Application Process
How do I apply for the SRD R350 grant?
You can apply for the SRD R350 grant through multiple channels:
- Online at the official SASSA SRD website: srd.sassa.gov.za
- WhatsApp: Send a message to 082 046 8553
- USSD: Dial *134*7737# from any mobile phone
- Call the SASSA toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11
What documents do I need to apply?
For the online application, you don't need to submit physical documents. You will need to provide:
- Your South African ID number
- Your name and surname as they appear on your ID
- Your gender and disability status
- Your contact details (cell phone number and email if available)
- Your residential address
- Your banking details (if you want to receive payment via bank transfer)
How long does the application process take?
The application process itself takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. After submission, SASSA will verify your information against various government databases, which typically takes 3-5 business days. During high-volume periods, this verification process may take up to 10 business days.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No, you don't need to reapply every month. Once approved, your grant is typically valid for the current approval cycle, which is usually three months. SASSA will notify you when you need to reconfirm your details or reapply. However, it's important to keep checking your status regularly as your circumstances are continuously verified against government databases, and your approval status could change if your situation changes.
Can I apply on behalf of someone else?
No, each applicant must apply for themselves. Applying on behalf of someone else is not permitted and may constitute fraud. If someone is unable to apply due to disability or other limitations, they should contact their nearest SASSA office for assistance.
Eligibility Requirements
Who qualifies for the SRD R350 grant?
To qualify for the R350 grant, you must meet all of these criteria:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered with Home Affairs
- Be aged between 18 and 60 years
- Be unemployed
- Not receive income from any other source
- Not receive any other social grant
- Not receive unemployment insurance benefit
- Not receive a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
- Not reside in a government-funded institution
Can I receive the R350 grant if I receive another SASSA grant?
No, if you are already receiving another social grant (such as Child Support Grant, Old Age Grant, or Disability Grant), you do not qualify for the SRD R350 grant. However, if you are a caregiver who receives a Child Support Grant on behalf of children in your care, but you personally don't receive any grant, you may qualify for the SRD R350 grant.
I'm a student. Can I apply for the SRD R350 grant?
If you are a student who does not receive NSFAS funding or any other government funding for your studies, and you meet all other eligibility criteria, you may apply for the SRD R350 grant. However, if you receive any form of stipend or allowance from NSFAS or any other government institution, you will not qualify.
Does having money in my bank account disqualify me?
SASSA conducts a means test as part of the verification process. If the average balance in your bank account over three months exceeds R624 (approximately), you may be disqualified as this suggests you have another source of income. However, occasional deposits that don't constitute regular income (like once-off gifts) should not affect your eligibility.
I'm a foreigner with a valid permit. Can I apply?
Yes, if you are a permanent resident or a refugee with valid documentation from the Department of Home Affairs, you can apply for the SRD R350 grant, provided you meet all other eligibility criteria. Asylum seekers and other permit holders may not qualify.
Payment and Collection
How will I receive my R350 grant payment?
You can receive your payment through several methods:
- Direct deposit into your bank account (if you provided banking details)
- Collection at any South African Post Office branch
- Collection at participating retailers (Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers, and USave)
- Automatic loading onto your SASSA card (if you have one)
When will I receive my payment?
SRD R350 grant payments are typically made according to a schedule based on the last three digits of your ID number. Bank payments are usually processed first, followed by Post Office and retail partner collections. You can check the payment schedule for specific dates.
What do I need to bring when collecting my grant?
When collecting your grant at the Post Office or a retail partner, you must bring your South African ID document (green barcoded ID or smart ID card). No other person can collect the grant on your behalf.
What happens if I miss my payment collection date?
If you miss your scheduled payment collection date, don't worry. Your grant remains available for collection for up to 90 days (three months) from the date it becomes available. After this period, uncollected funds will be returned to SASSA.
Can I change my payment method from Post Office to bank account?
Yes, you can update your payment method by logging into the SASSA SRD website and updating your profile with your bank account details. This change typically takes effect from the next payment cycle.
Application Status
How do I check my application status?
You can check your application status through multiple channels:
- Using the Status Check tool on this website
- On the official SASSA SRD website: srd.sassa.gov.za
- WhatsApp: Send "status" to 082 046 8553
- USSD: Dial *134*7737# and follow the prompts
- Call the SASSA toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11
What do the different status messages mean?
Here are explanations for common status messages:
- Pending: Your application is still being processed or verified
- Approved: Your application has been successful and you will receive payment
- Declined: Your application was unsuccessful (a specific reason will be provided)
- Appeal Pending: Your appeal against a declined application is being reviewed
- Payment Pending: Your application is approved and payment is being processed
Why does my status show "Pending" for so long?
SASSA verifies applications against multiple databases, which can take time. Additionally, during periods of high application volume, processing times may be longer than usual. If your status has been "Pending" for more than 10 business days, you may want to contact the SASSA helpline for assistance.
What does "Declined: Already receiving income" mean?
This means SASSA's verification process found that you are registered on databases as receiving income from employment, UIF, or other sources. If you believe this is incorrect, you should submit an appeal with supporting documentation showing that you are not receiving income.
My status shows "Approved" but I haven't received payment. Why?
Payments are made according to a schedule based on the last three digits of your ID number. Even after approval, it may take a few days before your payment is processed. Check the payment schedule to see when your payment is due. If your scheduled payment date has passed and you still haven't received payment after 3 business days, contact the SASSA helpline.
Appeals Process
How do I appeal a declined application?
If your SRD R350 grant application is declined, you can submit an appeal through:
- The official SASSA SRD Appeals website: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
- Our Appeal Guide on this website
- WhatsApp: Send "appeal" to 082 046 8553
What is the deadline for submitting an appeal?
Appeals must be submitted within 30 days of receiving the declined status. After this period, you may need to submit a new application instead of an appeal.
What information should I include in my appeal?
When submitting an appeal, you should:
- Clearly state the reason for your appeal
- Explain why you believe the decision to decline your application was incorrect
- Provide any relevant information that may support your case (e.g., proof that you are unemployed, bank statements showing no regular income, etc.)
- Ensure all your contact details are correct so SASSA can reach you if needed
How long does the appeal process take?
The appeal process typically takes 15-30 working days to complete. During high-volume periods, it may take longer. You can check the status of your appeal using the same channels you use to check your application status.
Can I submit multiple appeals for the same application?
No, you can only submit one appeal per declined application. If your appeal is also declined,
What happens if my appeal is declined again?
If your appeal is declined, it means the decision to decline your application remains unchanged. Unfortunately, there is no further appeal process. You may need to submit a new application and ensure you meet all eligibility criteria.
